Premium Package – Testdrive by David Bateson
5 adrenalin-charged hours with the Maserati Spyder
We were down in Sydney for the weekend of Auto Italia Canberra and we'd been offered the chance to test drive 'a Maserati' on the Monday - we just didn't know which one it would be. It turned out to be a drop dead gorgeous Maserati Spyder Cambiocorsa...
Our overall impression was how straightforward it was to drive despite being such a powerful car. It doesn't demand to be driven hard like many sports cars but you know the reserve is there should you need it. With the top down idling at an intersection the engine noise is much louder than we anticipated & conversely the engine note is remarkably restrained when accelerating & quieter than we thought it would be (perhaps we just didn't rev it far enough up the range to get a real roar).
Likewise the Cambiocorsa F1 style paddleshift gearbox was very easy to use. Unlike the Alfa Romeo Selespeed gearbox the paddles you use to change gear are large and fixed to the steering column not the steering wheel.
